Bunded Oil Tank Replacement in Gussage All Saints, Near Wimborne

Our team have recently completed the replacement and relocation of a domestic oil storage tank at a property in Gussage All Saints, a village near Wimborne in Dorset.  The project involved much more than simply exchanging the old tank for a new one. Our engineers safely transferred the customer’s existing heating oil into a temporary holding tank, prepared a new base at the rear of the garden, installed a 1,235-litre Kingspan bunded oil tank and laid a new underground oil supply line back to the house.

Preparing for the oil tank replacement

Before moving the existing tank, our engineers drained the remaining heating oil into a suitable temporary holding tank. The existing oil tank was then moved out of position and safely capped. At the chosen location towards the rear of the garden, we laid a level concrete slab to provide a firm and stable base for the new tank.

Relocating the tank required careful planning because a new oil supply line also needed to be installed between the tank and the existing oil line at the house.

Installing the new Kingspan bunded oil tank

We supplied and fitted a 1,235-litre Kingspan bunded oil tank. A bunded tank consists of an inner oil-storage tank surrounded by a second protective outer layer, providing additional containment in the event of a leak from the inner tank.

Once the tank was securely positioned on its new concrete base, we supplied and fitted a new Watchman oil-level monitor. This allows the household to monitor the amount of heating oil remaining in the tank without having to check it manually.

A new oil filter was also fitted as part of the installation.

Laying the new underground oil line

Because the new oil tank was being relocated to the rear of the garden, our engineers needed to create a new route for the oil supply line.

The work included:

  • Digging a trench between the new tank position and the existing oil supply
  • Cutting and carefully lifting the required area of concrete
  • Laying a new oil line from the replacement tank to the existing oil line at the house
  • Connecting the existing oil line to the newly installed section
  • Backfilling the trench once the new line was safely in place
  • Reinstating the affected concrete area

This allowed the replacement tank to be positioned in its new location while remaining connected to the property’s existing oil-fired heating system.

Transferring the oil and testing the heating system

After the tank and oil line had been installed, the customer’s retained heating oil was pumped from the temporary holding tank into the new Kingspan tank.

Our engineers then purged the oil line to remove trapped air before firing up the boiler. The system was tested to confirm that oil was flowing correctly from the new tank and that the boiler was operating as expected.

Finally, the old oil tank was removed from the property and taken away from the site.

The finished result

The property now benefits from a new 1,235-litre bunded oil tank, positioned on a purpose-laid concrete base at the rear of the garden. The retained heating oil was successfully transferred, the new underground oil line was connected, and the boiler was tested following completion of the work.
