Are oil boilers being banned?

Are oil boilers being banned? What homeowners and businesses need to know

If your home or business uses an oil-fired boiler, you may have heard the claim that oil boilers could be banned. In this blog we’ll explain the current situation in the UK, what’s actually happening, and what it means for homeowners and installers in Dorset (and our wider service-area across Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire & Somerset).

What’s the background?

The UK Government’s drive towards net-zero emissions by 2050 has led to greater scrutiny of fossil‐fuel heating systems in homes, including oil boilers. The government has set various consultation proposals and targets for phasing out high-carbon heating.

What we believe along with future ready fuels…

Fair Heating for Oil Heated Homes

We stand for heating solutions that work for households using heating oil today. You shouldn’t face huge costs or disruption to go green. Low carbon fuels like HVO offer a cleaner switch without tearing homes apart or draining budgets.

Your Home, Your Choice

No one should be forced into a one-size-fits-all system. You know your home best and you deserve options that suit your space, your budget and your life. From family homes to village halls, we’re here to protect your right to choose.

A Smarter Way to Go Green

Heating oil users want to cut carbon, they just need the right support. We’re working with government, industry and consumers to deliver practical, low carbon solutions that start from where people are today so we can build a better future together.

So: Will an oil boiler installation truly be banned any time soon?

In short: No.  At some point there is likely to be a staged processed, but there is nothing set in stone.  What is clear is that people want to have the choice, the choice whether to move across to low carbon heating or not. This choice for many rural home owners will come down to cost and property suitability.

The UK government has confirmed that plans for an oil boiler ban, previously targeted for 2035, will no longer move forward.

A government spokesperson has told Homebuilding & Renovating “We will not force anyone to rip out a working boiler” although bans on oil boilers in new properties are still set to go ahead this year.

Instead, the focus will shift to encouraging households to adopt low-carbon heating alternatives, like air source heat pumps, by making them more appealing to homeowners through financial incentives and simplifying installations.

What are alternatives to oil boilers?

  • Heat pumps
  • Converting oil boiler to run on HVO (which many older oil boilers can be adapted for)
  • Hybrid systems (combining existing boiler + low-carbon tech)

At Total Energy Services we install hundreds of oil boilers, along with renewable heating systems such as heat pumps, if you are considering replacing your oil boiler but are also considering moving to a heat pump we can provide you with all the information and the costs for you to make an informed decision.

Summary

Many homes still rely on heating oil. That’s why we support renewable liquid fuels such as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), which offer a smooth, affordable transition to low carbon heating without the costly disruption of other technologies on offer.

We believe the path to net zero must be inclusive, practical and respectful of people’s choices.
