Heat your home for less

Heat your home for less

Learning how to be as energy efficient as possible has never been so important.  Despite the prime minister’s recent energy price guarantee of a typical household not paying over £2,500 a year for their gas and electricity, it is important to note this is based on the average home and will change depending on how much power is used by a bill payer.

Of course, it’s obvious that using as little energy as possible is the best way to save money on fuel bills but many homes in Britain are simply not well insulated. Especially in rural areas such as Dorset, Somerset, and Wiltshire where high ceilings, large single glazed windows and a lack of insulation makes heat loss a real issue.

Whilst older homes are captivating and beautiful, they are often difficult and expensive to keep warm.  Therefore, increasing the thermal performance of your home is an excellent way to stay more in control of your fuel bills this winter. Before thinking about making fabric alterations to your home it is important your current heating system is efficient and working to its optimum performance.

Consider replacing your boiler

Whilst this may seem extreme if your boiler is old and inefficient it doesn’t matter what heat loss prevention tasks you undertake you will still be paying more for heating your home than you need be.

Other benefits of a new boiler are enjoying a long guarantee of up to 12 years, quiet operating boiler and more options to controlling your heating.

Book your annual boiler service

Getting your boiler serviced before the weather turns and its time to switch on your heating is a great way to ensure you are entering the cooler months on the best possible footing.

A boiler service will give the boiler a good clean and ensure all components are working as they should.

Regular boiler servicing will go a long way to enhance the life span of your boiler, by ensuring that signs of wear and tear are rectified, and components are kept clean. What’s more it’s a condition of many boiler manufacturers guarantee that a boiler is serviced annually.

Give radiators the once over

Ensuring your radiators are working efficiently is crucial.   Inefficient radiators put an unnecessary strain on your boiler which can lead to a costly breakdown and/or not providing the correct heat output.

Signs radiators may not be performing as they should are;

  • Cold spots on radiators
  • Require constant bleeding
  • Noisy boiler
  • Cold radiators but hot pipes
  • Very dirty water coming from radiators when being bled

In this case your system may require a powerflush. A powerflush is essentially a deep clean of your central heating system. This process is usually undertaken prior to the installation of a new boiler but can also remove the sludge and debris build up in a heating system that is not having a boiler replaced.

Thermostatic radiator valves

TRV’s as they are commonly known can help to slash energy bills by 40% experts say. TRV’s work by allowing you to change the temperature on different radiators in your home. Unused bedrooms for example can be set at a lower temperature than rooms that are in a higher demand.

Lastly but certainly not least are Smart Controls

For example, the Bosch Easy Control Smart thermostat – allows you to be in full control of your homes heating from your smart phone. Turning off heating in an unused bedroom, checking energy usage from your phone in a matter of clicks? This simple to use smart thermostat makes it easy to control your heating and hot water whilst saving energy.
