A-rated oil boilers are the most efficient boilers you can get. They can reach an efficiency of 90% or higher if correctly maintained and looked after. All boilers are given a rating from A – G, with A being the highest. All new boilers will have an A-rating, meaning they should reach an efficiency of at least 90%. It is hard to determine the rating of an older oil boiler as the rating would have been retrospectively applied. All A-rated boilers whether gas or oil come with a stamp of approval from the Energy Saving Trust.

Like natural gas and LPG boilers, there are three types of oil boilers.
Combi / combination boilers provide heating and hot water on demand. They do not require any tanks or cylinders thereby saving space. The downside of a combi boiler can be that if the boiler breaks down you do not have the benefit of a back up immersion. An immersion acts as an separate source of hot water, which is very useful if your boiler has broken down.
A regular oil boiler also called heat only boiler requires storage tanks. This type of boiler will fill up a hot water storage tank usually located in the loft, perfect for those with a high hot water demand. You will also require a cold water storage tank to feed into the hot water storage tank.
Similar to regular boilers, system boilers only provide your heating and a separate hot water cylinder will produce your hot water. The main difference is that system boilers do not require a cold water storage tank, as the boiler takes its water from the mains water supply. If you live in a large house with over 3 bathrooms a system boiler can be a very good option.
