Why might you smell oil?

Turning your boiler on after summer

You may notice a slight smell of oil when turning the boiler back on after a summer of it being off. If your boiler is working correctly this smell should quickly go. If you continue to smell oil this could indicate a fault with the boiler or system and we would very much advise you seek assistance, you should never try to diagnose your own boiler faults or remove any casing around your boiler.

A OFTEC heating engineer will be able to find the source of the fault and get your boiler running efficiently and odourless again. For example, it could be something as simple as a blocked oil nozzle.

Still smelling oil?

If you have a persistent smell of oil the best thing to do is turn off your boiler and wait for the assistance of an OFTEC oil boiler engineer.

Common Causes of Odours from Oil Boilers

Oil Boiler Leak

One of the most common causes of odours from oil boilers is a leak. An oil boiler leak can occur due to a variety of reasons, such as a faulty seal, a crack in the tank, or loose fittings. When oil leaks, it emits a strong, distinctive smell that can quickly permeate your home. If you suspect a leak, it’s essential to act promptly to prevent further damage and potential hazards.

  1. Identifying a Leak: Look for signs such as oil stains around the boiler or on the floor. You might also notice an oily residue on the boiler itself. These are clear indicators of a leak.
  2. Addressing the Leak: It’s important to contact a professional for oil boiler repair. They have the expertise to fix the leak safely and efficiently, ensuring that your boiler operates correctly.

Incomplete Combustion

Incomplete combustion occurs when the oil in your boiler doesn’t burn completely. This can happen if there’s insufficient air supply or if the burner is malfunctioning. The result is a noticeable smell of oil or even a sooty odour.

  1. Symptoms of Incomplete Combustion: You may observe black soot around the boiler or a yellow flame instead of a blue one. These are signs that combustion isn’t happening as it should.
  2. Solutions: Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent incomplete combustion. Make sure your boiler is serviced annually by a qualified technician who can clean the burner, adjust the air supply, and ensure everything is in good working order.

Exhaust or Ventilation Issues

Proper ventilation is essential for the safe operation of your oil boiler. If there’s a problem with the exhaust system, such as a blockage or damage, odours can escape into your home.

  1. Checking Ventilation: Inspect the flue or chimney for obstructions like bird nests or debris. Also, ensure that all vents and air inlets are clear and functioning properly.
  2. Professional Inspection: If you suspect a ventilation issue, it’s best to have a professional examine the system. They can identify and rectify any problems to ensure your boiler operates safely.

Oil Quality

The quality of the oil used in your boiler can also affect the presence of odours. Low-quality oil may contain impurities that lead to a stronger smell when burned.

  1. Choosing Quality Oil: Always opt for high-grade heating oil from reputable suppliers. This not only reduces odours but also improves the efficiency and longevity of your boiler.
  2. Regular Oil Checks: Have your oil supply checked regularly for any signs of contamination or degradation. This can prevent unpleasant odours and ensure optimal performance.

After an oil delivery?

When you receive an oil delivery you may also smell oil during  and after the tank has been filled.  Again this should only be a faint smell which will gradually go. If the smell doesn’t go then it may be that some of the oil has been spilt. It may also be that there is a leak from your oil line, tank or pipe work again this will require an heating engineer to rectify the fault.

Important: Oil Tank Maintenance

Its good to get into the habit of having a quick check of your oil tank for signs of wear and tear this could include any bulging or splits. Another tell tale sign is dying plants around the tank which could indicate a leak.  Black stains on the tank base is also a good sign something is a miss.

Check your home insurance

It’s a good idea to check your home insurance policy to see if you are covered for any oil spills or leaks which could cause damage to you or your neighbours property. Oil spills are taken very seriously for good reasons. Pollution and contamination incidents can be excluded but they can be included if you require with certain restrictions.

Preventative Measures and Maintenance

Regular Maintenance

Regular maintenance is key to preventing odours from your oil boiler. Schedule annual inspections with a qualified technician who can perform necessary repairs and adjustments. This proactive approach helps identify potential issues before they become major problems.

Monitoring Oil Levels

Keep an eye on your oil levels to avoid running out unexpectedly, which can lead to air entering the system and causing odours. Use an oil gauge or install a smart monitor to track usage and plan for timely refills.

Cleaning and Ventilation

Ensure that the area around your boiler is clean and well-ventilated. Remove any dust, debris, or obstructions that could affect the operation of the boiler or the exhaust system. Proper ventilation is crucial for safe and odour-free operation.
